Fundamentally Flawed Podcast #18 – Eric Hovind and Dustin Segers Special

Another epic, in which Alex gets quite annoyed, and Jim calls Eric a ‘liar for money’

A disastrous showing for Dustin and Eric. Especially hilarious was the last half hour where Jim and I practically begged them to provide just one peer reviewed pro-Creationist paper, and Dustin and Eric flubbered and blustered and failed to name a single example, despite claiming there are lots out there – Alex
cant wait to hear this one. Seems like the statement “flubbered and blustered” may not be TRUE,.. but it could be by the atheistic subjective definition of truth; “that which serves my purposes.”
The truth is what remains when all assumptions and presumptions are removed.
Truth is that which conforms to reality or actuality. – Alex
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me. John 14:6
Only gods and the supernatural don’t exist, so Jesus was wrong.
How could Jesus be wrong, if He didn’t exist?
A fictional character can be wrong. Boromir was wrong in The Lord of the Rings.
What’s your point?

I really like your podcasts. It’s tough to listen to the ones where you talk to these TAG guys but it really is making me more of a atheist; if that’s possible. Sure we all have to start somewhere but as an atheist, I think that reality is where we all appear to be. Our perceptions could be wrong but that’s really all we have to go by. There’s a consensus of things that we agree on. Red is red, up is up, etc. This might not be right, but it doesn’t really matter as long as we all agree on those “facts”. This allows us to discuss things rationally without too much ambiguity. Maybe it is all in my head, but that’s not really relevant since that would still be the only reality I have.
The theists on the other hand say, “I know red is red and up is up because god told me so.” WTF? We believe in the same reality but they know it’s correct because god told them so? Why do we need a god then? Oh right. God told me too. That’s why I’m rational. What a bunch of loons.
Thanks for the podcasts!

IMHO, Segers and Hvind acquitted themselves well. They know how to play the apologetic debate game and held the upper hand until you started highlighting the absurdity of their claims about fossils, the geological record, etc. My intention is not to criticize – counter-apologetics is not easy, especially when you are tussling with an opponent with some philosophical sophistication like Segers (who reminds me of a folksy Frank Turek). When these guys start talking about truth, you should quickly agree that objective truth exists (i.e. that which correponds to reality) and then concede that ultimate truth is likely beyond our ken. They are the ones making the assertive claim so I would play along with them (i.e. “ok, let’s assume your presupposition is correct”) and then start exposing the contradiction between their theological beliefs and the scientific evidence. The funny thing is that these are the same people who will gladly rely on scientific consensus for medical treatment, structural integrity of buildings and the design of their GPS devices. They single out biological science for extreme skepticism (notice how uncomfortable Segers was when you asked for his cite … you should have asked for a copy of his “notes”) because they understand it totally undercuts their theology. From their perspective it literally can’t be true.
I’d be interested in knowing how Jim knows his definition of truth to be the true definition of truth.
Because, at no time, does it require wishful thinking or an avoidance of the evidence.
